Overview

Consider joining the Pennex family as a Manager, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at our Leetonia, OH location.  The Manager, Environmental Health and Safety will perform safety and health activities in manufacturing plants to evaluate and control environmental hazards. This position has at least one direct subordinate, and the position requires supervision of projects, peers, and higher-ranking staff members as related to OSHA, EPA, DEP and associated governmental agency compliance issues. This position is the focal point for assuring conformity by all staff associates to legal, technical, and ethical issues relating to health, environmental and safety requirements.  This is a hands-on Safety Manager role. The ideal candidate is energized by being on the floor, coaching teams, and directly executing safety tasks rather than delegating them.

Responsibilities

Health & Safety:

  • Provide safety orientation training to all new hires.
  • Develop and provide ongoing OSHA compliance training to all employees and maintain all records.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of both new and existing regulations through the review of periodicals, seminar attendance, and the use of consultants.
  • Implement injury reporting for the purpose of investigation and reduction of injuries.
  • Maintain master files for all SDS’s.
  • Maintain an emergency evacuation program in the event of fire, explosion, etc.
  • Act as primary 24-hour emergency coordinator for onsite events involving the fire department and/or emergency management agency.
  • Assess the need for and order all personal protective equipment.  Coordinate specifications of safety equipment and enforces use of safety equipment.
  • Act as chairman of the safety committee and ergonomic task team.
  • Coordinate annual audiometric examinations for all employees.
  • Identify potential causes for accidents and recommend changes in policies and procedures to prevent accidents and illness. Investigate accidents and prepare accident reports.  Work with Senior HR Manager, insurance carriers, and consultants to reduce costs associated with job related injuries and illnesses.
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene air monitoring as needed to investigate and reduce employee exposure to airborne contaminants.
  • Maintain and calibrate instruments.  Clean and inspect respirators and coordinate distribution of respirators, including conducting respirator fit tests.
  • Train employees on safety and health requirements to ensure compliance with regulations. Train forklift operators to qualify for licensing.
  • Oversee activities and monitor for health and safety violations. Test noise levels and measures air quality.
  • Issue and monitor hot work permits, confined space entries, and lockout/tag out permits.
  • Develop and monitor emergency action plans.

Environmental Duties:

  • Manage the environmental programs, processes, and all mandated environmental reporting.
  • Obtain any/all necessary environmental permits.
  • Perform all functions necessary to satisfy SARA Title III requirements.
  • Monitor/sample/analyze environmental process systems throughout the plant.
  • Coordinate any spill response, remedial effort, or environmental field work as needed.
  • Develop and implement storm water monitoring program.
  • Recommend changes to process systems to improve compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management or relatable field or equivalent experience required
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in advanced manufacturing, OSHA/Safety Program Management, automotive exposure safety administration responsibilities with an understanding of federal, state, and local procedures
  • 5 to 7 years of EHS leadership in extrusion or fabrication manufacturing is preferred.
  • OSHA 30-hour Certification (current or willing to obtain) is required
  • Certified ISO 14001 and/or 45001 auditor preferred
  • CPR/AED Certified/Instructor preferred

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Manufacturing experience required
  • Must be able to problem solve and think outside of the box
  • Experience in team building
  • Thorough understanding of compliance and regulatory knowledge for environmental, safety, and health
  • Clear communication skills. Understanding of OSHA criteria
  • Understanding of permits, federal, state, and region
  • Understanding of hazardous materials and regulations
  • Experience with construction and contractors/vendors
  • Understanding of behavior-based safety programs
  • Serve as the primary ambassador for safety, modeling the behaviors, communication, and decision-making expected throughout the plant.
  • Build a positive, collaborative safety culture where employees feel respected, included, and comfortable reporting concerns.
  • Partner with production, maintenance, quality, HR, and engineering leaders to reinforce shared ownership of safety—not siloed responsibility.
  • Facilitate daily engagement on the floor, building strong relationships with supervisors, leads, and operators.
  • Promote “Safety as a Core Value” through coaching, recognition, and consistent follow-through.
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing environment
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, and eager to learn and apply new skills
  • Attentive to details and follows through on assigned tasks and commitments
  • Flexible and driven to meet tight deadlines, handle multiple projects and prioritize them appropriately
  • Strong organizational skills, and ability to effectively disseminate information in a clear and concise manner
  • Regular attendance required
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen
