Overview

 

Caster

 

Nights 7pm to 7am  - 12 Hour Shifts 

 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Cleans residual aluminum left over from the previous cast from the distribution pan, transfer nozzles mold assemblies and other spots around the casting unit.
  • Paints distribution pan, filter bowl and transfer troughs with a mixture of bone ash and water.
  • Sands and paints mold assemblies.
  • Installs ceramic foam filter in filter bowl.
  • Preheats and dries trough, filter bowl and distribution pan until ready to start cast.
  • Aligns started blocks by ensuring spool is centered in mold.  Manually adjusts starter blocks as needed.
  • With assistance from Crew Foreman and Furnace Operator, begins cast as follows:
    • Removes tap plug from tap lock. 
    • Clears tap hole to obtain molten metal flow.
    • After distribution reaches proper level, starts flow of cooling water.
    • Maintains proper level of molten metal in distribution to assure proper flow into molds.
  • Shuts down cast when logs reach proper length.
  • Assists Saw Operator and Saw Helper roll logs from table to saw area.
  • Assists Furnace Operator load aluminum into furnace.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); several years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write simple reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively to other employees and supervisors.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Must possess a valid Forklift Operator’s license and have prior forklift experience.
  • Must be able to operate overhead crane. 
  • Must complete Molten Metal training.

Physical

  • The employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment

  • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and explosives.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
