Overview

Job Summary: Consider joining the Pennex family as a Mechanical Engineer in Extrusion Tooling at our Leetonia, OH location. The Mechanical Engineer, Extrusion Tooling plays a critical role in the design, development, and optimization of extrusion tooling systems used in Aluminum. The Mechanical Engineer, Extrusion Tooling collaborates with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and quality control, to ensure the efficient and effective operation of extrusion processes. The primary focus of the role is to design and improve tooling systems, troubleshoot issues, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and product quality.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Extrusion Tooling: Design and develop extrusion tooling systems that meet product specifications, considering factors such as material properties, dimensions, tolerances, and process requirements. Utilize CAD software and simulation tools to create detailed designs and ensure tooling functionality and manufacturability.
  • Process Optimization: Analyze and optimize extrusion processes to improve product quality, reduce scrap rates, and increase productivity. Collaborate with production teams to identify process bottlenecks, develop solutions, and implement improvements in tooling design, die configurations, cooling systems, and other process parameters.
  • Tooling Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of extrusion tooling to ensure their proper operation and longevity. Troubleshoot and resolve tooling-related issues, such as flow imbalances, die lines, melt fracture, or dimensional inconsistencies, to minimize downtime and production disruptions.
  • New Product Development: Collaborate with Customers and participate in the development of new extruded products. Provide technical expertise on tooling design and manufacturing considerations, material selection, and process feasibility to support the successful introduction of new products.
  • Quality Control and Continuous Improvement: Work closely with quality control teams to establish and maintain quality standards for extrusion processes. Participate in root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for tooling-related quality issues. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product consistency, dimensional accuracy, and overall process efficiency.
  • Documentation and Standardization: Create and maintain documentation related to extrusion tooling design, specifications, standard operating procedures, and best practices. Ensure accurate and up-to-date records of tooling modifications, maintenance activities, and process changes.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including production, engineering, quality control, and supply chain, to ensure seamless coordination and alignment of tooling-related activities. Participate in design reviews, process improvement projects, and problem-solving efforts.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards throughout the design, maintenance, and operation of extrusion tooling systems. Identify and address potential safety hazards and mitigate risks associated with tooling and process operations.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Education 

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or a related field.

Experience 

  • 2 years solid mechanical design (extrusion preferred)
  • 2 years working with cross functional team

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities      

 

  • Working knowledge of FEA
  • Knowledge and understanding of extrusion processes.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for tooling design, such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar applications.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, including mechanical design, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and material selection. Ability to apply these principles to design robust and efficient extrusion tooling systems.
  • Familiarity with quality control methodologies, statistical process control, and process optimization techniques. Ability to analyze process data, identify improvement opportunities, and implement changes to enhance product quality and process efficiency.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot tooling-related issues and optimize extrusion processes.
  • Familiarity of materials used in extrusion, such die steels and 6000 series Aluminum.
  • Familiarity with quality control methodologies, statistical process control, and root cause analysis
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy, precision, and attention to tooling specifications.
  • Project management skills to manage multiple projects concurrently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Continuous learning mindset and a desire to stay updated on industry trends, advancements, and best practices in extrusion technology.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations related to extrusion processes and tooling operations.
  • Understanding and compliance with industry standards, such as ISO 9001 or specific industry regulations, to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • History of efficient communication with management and team members of various skillsets
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States, visa sponsorships are not available
